Tim Morrison’s been on a rock n’roll road trip since re-appearing on The Voice and becoming one of the top four finalists on Delta Goodrem’s team. Before moving in a solo-music direction, Tim toured extensively out front for Melbourne rock outfit Trial Kennedy. Once touted as the next big thing in Australian music, the band also received great praise for their debut album New Manic Art which celebrated its 10th Anniversary recently and saw Trial Kennedy reunite for a sold-out show at Max Watts in Melbourne last month.
It’s a familiar sight for fans of Tim’s previous band, combined with new fans who witnessed him on hit show, and now it’s a sight Australian music fans can once again with the release of Shine, Tim’s first solo single.
Shine, the first of many solo tracks Tim has ready to be put down on tape, led this Melbourne boy into the studio of good friend and acclaimed rock producer Hadyn Buxton, who last worked with Tim on Trial Kennedy’s 2011 album Living Undesigned.
Having written Shine on piano, Tim knew he wanted to play the instrument on the recording and the end result is a track that soars. There is urgency to the bristling keys of the intro that opens out into a gorgeous rock chorus propelled by that voice. It’s a voice honed through years of live performing and now Tim is giving it reign to tell his own stories.
“There is something extremely exhilarating about creating music on your own,” Tim says of being a solo artist. “Of having that freedom of creative control.”
“But on the flip side you lose that joy of creating as a group. You really cannot compare the two. You love them equally but they’re just different.”
Having stepped out on his own, Tim has spent the last year writing and recording tracks here and overseas, working with a whole range of producers interested in hearing Tim develop a style all his own.
“The Voice made me realise who I do and don’t want to be as a musician and for that I am forever grateful. Strangely enough, my experience also taught me not to take myself too seriously,” Tim explains.
Tim Morrison performs a tasty collection of his acoustic favourites on Friday June 15 on the deck at Rosebud Hotel from 9pm and Friday June 22 at The Cove Hotel in Patterson Lakes from 8pm. For full gig guide details visit www.pearlhq.com.au
