Urban Spread’s Summer Series will melt faces with the announcement that Oz hip hop royalty Seth Sentry and special guests Mantra and Ivan Ooze will be bringing the cream of Australian hip hop to the Chelsea Heights Hotel on Australia Day Eve, Monday January 25th. Urban Spread has you covered with summer’s biggest hip hop party!
One of Australia’s brightest talents, Seth Sentry has squeezed a lifetime’s career into just a few years, from storming his own nation’s airwaves, to bringing it home (and not swearing once) on Jimmy Kimmel Live. He is a consummate showman, a gifted songwriter and the rare kind of rapper that doesn’t take his own shit too seriously. Turning out hit single after hit single, his first album, This Was Tomorrow took Seth to the forefront of Australian hip hop, in the process earning him a gold record, an ARIA nomination, literally millions of YouTube views, and accolades like Channel [V] Artist of The Year. “My Scene”, “Float Away” and “Dear Science” established Seth’s patented blend of nostalgia and humour, and were met with massive radio play. This year’s follow up, Strange New Past is already cementing Sentry’s rightful place at the forefront of Australia’s burgeoning hip hop scene.
For all of his smartarse humour, there has always been a dark tinge to Mantra’s work. For a decade he has been one of the best MCs in Australia, loved as an underground hip-hop icon by a mix of his peers and his fans, earning the reputation of ‘your favourite rapper’s favourite rapper’. He’s never really written for the pop charts, nor has he spent a decade laying rhyming hyperbole on himself. As he has done in his career working with troubled youth, Mantra investigates the less glamorous side of reality, looking through a microscope at the violence and mental illness abundant in a modern man’s world.
Borrowing his alias from his favourite Mighty Morphin Power Rangers villain and part of the new breed of hip hop artists taking the country by storm, IVAN OOZE is pushing boundaries and connecting with his audience. His previous two singles Trippin’ and Jimi Hendrix have seen him cement his social media hype into legitimate industry buzz, with massive amounts of love coming from media and tastemakers across the country.
